“Okay Paul, thanks for the report.” Agent Stan Harris flipped the file closed and moved it to the pile at his left.

Paul’s chair scraped loudly as he stood. “Stan, there’s something I want you to see.”

“What now? Another strangled giant?”

Paul grinned. “Just peek out your door a minute.” Continue reading

Agent Harris scowled at his subordinate. “Send that kid back to whatever school he came from.” Used to be the outfit held to regular standards. Now they sent these experts. None of ‘em worth their fat fees and now a green kid. Continue reading

Tony Ferragamo watched Nicholi “Nicky” Segovia stoop and inspect him. If this huge Teddy bear of a man was FBI, how did he fit in the picture?

Roya leaned against the kitchen table. “The gray hair isn’t good enough, Nicky. I’ll get the shears.” She left the room and came back with an electric clipper that looked like a leftover from a dog groomer. “Tonsure it.” Continue reading

Frank backed away from the bedroom window.  So many police cars.  It was good that Roya was someplace else.  He checked himself—wrong time to start thinking about Roya and Tony.  No sign of the police boat yet.  “Tatiana, don’t move from this room.  If they question you, tell them I held you hostage—you got that?”  Continue reading

“Yes Paul?” Agent Stan Harris put down a report on his battered desk and looked up at the younger man.

Paul handed him a printout. “Positive ID on Frank Smith. Lake Geneva. Restaurant owner spotted him and watched him drive off in a white Mercedes. And Stan—we got the tags. Continue reading

“Lend me your pistol, will you, Frank? Tony’s .38 is too big for a girl.” Roya leaned down to Frank as he sat on the park bench and when he dropped the .22 in her bag, she pressed keys into his palm. “I’ll call you later.” She kissed his ear and whispered. “Keep Tatiana safe.” Frank thought that over until it registered, then nodded to himself. Tony might trace the car to Roya’s sister. She was being careful. Continue reading

Desi Grasso’s phone came alive with an electronic version of Ave Maria. After a pause, he answered it. “Speak.” His voice cracked and in his embarrassment, he knew nobody would ever mistake him for his Uncle.

“It’s Nick.” The metallic speaker made the voice more menacing. Desi recalled the expressionless eyes and asked, “Did you stake out Tony’s sister? Do you have him?” His Uncle taught him, always watch the family first. Continue reading

“I’m sorry, Uncle Uomo. Both of ‘em were already dead when we got there.”

A massive fist, came down on the desk and Desi watched Grasso’s bloated jowls tighten. “Do not—do not ever simper with apologies. If that were necessary, you would already be…let us say I would have no further use for your services.” He scowled and leaned back in his massive chair, suddenly placid or seemingly so. Desi knew his uncle’s changing moods. Continue reading

Stan Harris checked his service revolver and slipped his arms into his suit coat on the way out the building. The back seat of the Crown Vic made almost enough room for his big frame and he settled back while Special Agent Paul Schneider steered the car into traffic, then handed back a phone. Harris still refused to carry one. “St. Louis on the line, Stan.”

Harris took a deep breath before raising the phone to his face. “Sammy? Stan. No, I’m on my way to Joliet Airport to check on some dead mobsters. You got that St. Louis gravel truck shooting covered?” Continue reading

Roya abruptly turned serious. “That was unprofessional of me—taunting him from the window when he’s stalking us. Now he knows where we are.” She said something sharp in Russian. “We played these cat and mouse games, my Sergey and I. We took risks—enjoyed the game so much.” Continue reading

Tony cursed the traffic. A four-hour drive stretched to five in the aftermath of the downpour and it was getting dark. He pulled into a gas station. Tony wanted to keep tabs on his patsy, Frank Smith, but had to remain anonymous. It wouldn’t do to have two Frank Smiths around. Any number of two-bit street thugs might turn him in to the mob. In the dirty men’s room, he took off his suit and pulled on a worn pair of blue jeans and plain white tee shirt, tight, showing off his shoulders and biceps. He hadn’t shaved that morning and he let the stubble grow. A Cubs hat and a pair of wire-rims completed the disguise. Continue reading
